Practice this question in a realistic, spoken behavioral interview.
Question
Why do you want to work at this Company?
Generic praise falls apart fast here. "I like your culture" could describe a hundred companies. Pick two specific reasons: one about the company or product, and one about the actual role. Then connect both to something you have already done or want to do next.
Ground each reason in something concrete from your research: a specific product, a customer problem the company is solving, an engineering challenge you read about, or a company value you can argue you share. The aim is an answer that cannot be copy-pasted into a different application.
The Research Phase
Before shaping your answer, do your research. Spend at least 30 minutes collecting specific details before every interview.
Where to look:
The Company's Website: Read the "About Us," "Mission," and "Products" pages. What is their stated purpose? What problem do they solve for their customers?
The Job Description: Read it again, carefully. What are the key responsibilities? What technologies or skills are mentioned repeatedly?
Company Blog / Engineering Blog: This is one of the most valuable sources. It tells you about their technical challenges, their culture, and the projects they are proud of.
News Articles and Press Releases: What have they been in the news for recently? A new product launch? A major funding round?
LinkedIn: Look at the profiles of your interviewers and potential teammates. What is their background? What do they post about?
Product Reviews / Social Media: If they have a public-facing product, what do users say about it? What do they love? What do they complain about?
Your goal is to find 2-3 specific, positive points that resonate with you.
How to Connect Company, Role, and You
The answer should feel researched and mutual: why this company, why this role, and why your background fits the work.
The Company (The "Why Them"): Start with a specific, research-based point about the company as a whole. Make it clear you are interested in this company, not just any open role.
The Role (The "Why This Job"): Zoom in from the company to the specific role. Connect your interest to the details in the job description so the answer feels researched.
You (The "Why You"): Connect it back to yourself. Explain how your skills and experience fit the role and how it aligns with your career goals.
