Normal Forms in Practice

Storing the same fact in multiple places leads to contradictions. When an artist's country is recorded in five different tables, updating it in four but missing the fifth leaves the database disagreeing with itself. Normalization is the process of structuring tables so that each fact lives in exactly one place.
