They are a way to keep your search balanced.\n\nIf you only apply to reach companies, you may spend weeks waiting on long shots. If you only apply to safer-fit companies, you may miss stronger opportunities. Core-fit companies should sit at the center of the search because that is where your chances are usually strongest.\n\nA good starting list is around 30 to 40 companies:\n\n- 8 to 10 reach companies\n- 15 to 20 core-fit companies\n- 8 to 10 safer-fit companies\n\nThis is not a rule. It is a working list. At this stage, you are only deciding whether the company belongs on your list and how much effort it deserves.\n\nSpend five to ten minutes looking for signals that matter.\n\n- **Role match.** Does the job description match work you have actually done, or are you stretching too far?\n- **Tech stack.** If the company uses tools you know, your resume is easier to understand. If the stack is unfamiliar, you may still apply, but you need another strong reason.\n- **Company stage.** A 30-person startup, a 300-person scaleup, and a 10,000-person enterprise company hire differently. Your resume and expectations should fit the stage.\n- **Location and work model.** Remote, hybrid, relocation, visa support, time zone, and office expectations can decide fit before the resume is even read.\n- **Recent company signals.** Funding, product launches, leadership changes, layoffs, acquisitions, and hiring freezes can affect whether a posted role is active and urgent.\n- **Team growth.** If the company has several related roles open, the team may be growing. If the same role has been open for months, it may be urgent, poorly defined, or hard to fill.\n- **Reputation patterns.** Reviews are imperfect, but repeated themes about management, workload, pay, or the interview process are worth noting.\n- **Referral path.** A company where someone can introduce you usually deserves more attention than a similar company where you are applying completely cold.\n\nThe goal is not to become an expert on the company. The goal is to decide: reach, core fit, safer fit, or not worth pursuing right now.\n\n---\n\n# Building Your Target List\n\n### Start with a larger list\n\nPull names from job boards, products you use, companies your peers have joined, companies hiring for your stack, and companies where you already have a contact.\n\nAim for 40 to 50 names at first. You know where to tailor, where to look for referrals, and which companies deserve more effort.\n\n---\n\n# Targeting Mistakes to Avoid\n\nA target list goes wrong long before you apply, usually when it fills up with famous names and skips the constraints that decide whether a role is realistic at all.\n\n- **Only applying to famous companies.** Well-known companies are often crowded and selective. Keep them on the list, but do not make them the whole list.\n- **Calling a company \"safe.\"** No company is truly safe. Use \"safer fit\" to mean your match is clearer, not that an interview is guaranteed.\n- **Researching too much too early.** Five to ten minutes is enough to decide whether a company belongs on the list. Save deeper research for interviews and high-priority applications.\n- **Ignoring basic constraints.** Location, work model, visa support, level, and compensation range can make a role unrealistic even if the company is exciting.\n- **Treating every company the same.** A core-fit company with a referral deserves more effort than a cold application to a long-shot company.\n- **Forgetting to update the list.** If a company freezes hiring, removes the role, or clearly does not match your goals, move on.\n- **Mistaking brand interest for fit.** Liking a company is not the same as being a strong candidate for a specific role.\n\nA target list is useful because it turns the search from guessing into decision-making.
