As an API description grows, the same data shape often appears in several operations. A bookstore might describe its book payload separately for lookups and featured books. If someone adds a required field to one copy but misses the other, both sections remain valid YAML, yet consumers see conflicting definitions of what the service returns.
Reusable components give shared contract decisions a single definition. References connect operations to those definitions, whether they live in one file or several.
This chapter explains how to choose reuse boundaries, resolve references correctly, and avoid changes that unintentionally affect many operations. The examples use OpenAPI 3.1.2.
