We've seen that modern processors reorder memory operations for performance, and that acquire-release or sequential consistency semantics prevent certain reorderings. But how are these orderings actually enforced?\n\nThe answer is memory fences, also called memory barriers. These are special instructions that constrain how memory operations can be reordered. Stall the CPU pipeline until pending operations complete\n2. Drain the store buffer\n3. May invalidate speculative execution\n4.
