What if you're just incrementing a counter and don't care about other variables? This is where memory ordering comes in, the ability to choose exactly how much synchronization you need.\n\nMemory ordering is about choosing the right level of guarantee for your use case. Sequential consistency gives you the strongest guarantees but costs the most. Relaxed ordering gives you almost nothing but is nearly free. Acquire-release sits in between. Understanding these options lets you write correct code that's also fast.\n\n---\n\n## What is Memory Ordering?\n\nThink about sending mail. You have several options:\n\n1. **Express guaranteed delivery:** Your letter arrives tomorrow, and you get confirmation. Expensive, but you know exactly when it arrives.\n2. **Priority mail:** Arrives in 2-3 days. Cheaper, and you can track it, but less precise timing.\n3. **Standard mail:** Eventually arrives. Cheapest, but you have no idea when.\n\nMemory ordering is similar. You're choosing how much the processor must coordinate memory operations:\n\n- **Sequential consistency:** Every operation appears to happen in one global order. All threads see the same sequence of events. Expensive but simple to reason about.\n- **Acquire-release:** Operations don't reorder past certain boundaries. Cheaper than sequential consistency, provides targeted synchronization.\n- **Relaxed:** Just atomicity, no ordering guarantees. You cannot have Thread 1 see y=0 while Thread 2 sees x=0, because that would require each thread's read to precede the other's write, which violates the single total order.\n\n**Key property:** There exists some total order of all seq_cst operations that is consistent with each thread's program order and each thread's observations.\n\n**Cost:** Every seq_cst operation requires synchronization with all other threads. The rationale:\n\n1. Simpler programming model reduces bugs\n2. Performance difference is minimal for most applications\n3. If you need maximum performance, use channels or unsafe (at your own risk)\n\n \n\n### Acquire-Release Semantics\n\nAcquire-release provides targeted synchronization between a specific producer and consumer.\n\n**Release:** A release store ensures that all prior writes are visible before the store completes. It prevents earlier writes from being reordered past the store.\n\n**Acquire:** An acquire load ensures that subsequent reads see all writes that happened before the corresponding release. The acquire load acts as a barrier: all reads after it wait until the load completes. The `memory_order_acquire` on the load ensures the consumer's read of `data` sees the producer's write. All atomic operations provide sequential consistency. There's no ordering relationship between Thread 1's writes and Thread 2's reads. Every atomic operation in Go provides sequential consistency. This means:\n\n1. **For counters:** `atomic.AddInt64` provides more ordering than strictly necessary, but the performance cost is acceptable for most use cases\n\n1. **If you need true relaxed semantics:** You would need to use `unsafe` package tricks, which is strongly discouraged\n\n1. **The philosophy:** Go prefers correctness over micro-optimization. The performance difference between relaxed and seq_cst is usually negligible compared to the bugs that relaxed ordering can introduce.\n\n**When Go's approach is \"wasteful\":**\n\nOn ARM, a pure relaxed increment might be 2-3x faster than a seq_cst increment. However:\n\n- Most programs are not bottlenecked on atomic operations\n- The simpler mental model prevents subtle bugs\n- If atomics are your bottleneck, redesign your algorithm\n\n**Go's perspective on memory ordering:**\n\nFrom the Go Memory Model: \"Programs that modify data being simultaneously accessed by multiple goroutines must serialize such access.
